- What is the Education & Training Laboratory?
- As one of the primary facilities in ICBR, the Education & Training Laboratory (EdLab) is an integral component of the University of Florida Biotechnology Research. Our mission is to expand the research frontier for the benefit of humankind through hands-on molecular biology training.
- To find out more about the ICBR, you can visit their About ICBR page.
You can also find out more about the Education & Training Laboratory by visiting our Homepage. - What does the Education & Training Laboratory have to offer?
- The Education & Training Laboratory (EdLab) is dedicated to promoting the use of most current molecular biology tools in life sciences research. We are the unit responsible for organizing and implementing the ICBR's training program. Our fully dedicated 2,000 sq. ft. facility is equipped with basic molecular biology teaching instrumentation. This is the site where we hold numerous workshops and short courses throughout the year. We also organize symposia and seminars on a wide range of topics. Since its inception in 1989, the EdLab has facilitated some 130 workshops attended by more than 3500 scientists. Each event is designed to foster interdisciplinary activity among participants.
- The workshops target graduate students and faculties who are interested in applying Molecular Biology methodology to their research, but do not yet have the necessary experience or background to appreciate the potential and limitations of the techniques. Instruction is provided by both ICBR staff and invited experts in a semi-formal, highly interactive setting. Over 70 University of Florida faculty members from more than 25 different departments have either lectured or assisted in experimental design and laboratory instruction. The workshop topics have included Recombinant DNA methods, Protein Chemistry/ Proteomics, Genomics, Glycobiology, Molecular Markers, DNA Forensics, Differential Gene Expression Experimental Design and Analysis (Microarrays, Differential Display), Laser Capture Microscopy, Electron Microscopy, In Situ Hybridization and Bioinformatics.
- Visit our Courses Offered and Workshops to see what is being offered by the Education & Training Laboratory today.
- How do I find the Education & Training Laboratory?
- The Education & Training Laboratory is located in the ICBR area of the Cancer and Genetics Research Complex (CGRC). For more information please visit our directions page.

- Whom do I contact?
- Please contact either Sharon Norton or David Nolan with any questions.
- How do I join the ICBR Educational Email List?
- To join the ICBR education email list, please send an email to the UF List Server. You may leave the subject line blank. In the body of your email, please include the following: subscribe BIOTECHED-L Firstname Lastname where Firstname and Lastname are replaced with your name.
- To access the email archive and get more information, please visit the ICBR Education & Training Email List.
- How do I transfer and access files with the Educational Laboratory?
- If you are looking for general course materials, many of these files are already available through the Materials page.
- If you are trying to submit (upload) files to the Education & Training, you may use the ICBR FTP Server for the time being*. When using the FTP server anonymously through an Internet browser, most users will be able to drag-and-drop files between their computer and the browser. After you transfer your files please contact Sharon Norton with the file name and any pertinent information. Take into consideration that after seven (7) days, any files you transferred will be deleted from the FTP server's incoming directory.
- *FTP is an insecure protocol, and the ICBR will likely switch to another method of submitting and receiving files in near the future.
- What is the "Biotechnology Academy"?
- ICBR's Education & Training Laboratory issues certificates to workshop attendants. We're currently planning on several biotechnology programs in certain fields. Students who finish those required courses and workshops will receive a biotechnology certificate in that field. Please check back later for more information.
- What is the "Course Material Disclaimer"?
- The Following is the ICBR Education & Training Course Material Disclaimer:
- Manuals and other course materials are provided for the use of ICBR EdLab students and workshop participants only. While these protocols work in our teaching environment, we will not guarantee their success outside of our lab. With the exception of our class participants, we will NOT entertain questions on how to adapt these protocols to your research. For files in PDF format, you may need to download the Adobe Acrobat Reader.

- Some course materials posted are from the previous year's courses that we taught and may not necessarily reflect what will be taught this year. We have decided to make them available so that our students will have an idea as to the topics that will be covered in the course so that they may be more prepared to succeed in our workshops.
- We are currently in the process of rewriting many of of our course materials, therefore not all the manuals are available at this time. As they become available, the corresponding hyperlinks will be updated.
