Seminar: SOMAscan – A Next Generation Protein Biomarker Discovery Platform
August 26, 2015 @ 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Speaker: Brian J. Wendelburg, PhD, Regional Manager, SE, SomaLogic
Protein biomarkers offer tremendous potential to accelerate personalized or precision medicine, especially for the early detection and management of many different diseases and conditions. The technological challenge has always been discovering and subsequently applying those biomarkers in a timely and reliable manner. This presentation will describe a breakthrough protein biomarker discovery technology called SOMAscan.
The SOMAscan assay is enabled by a new generation of protein-capture reagents called SOMAmers (Slow Off-rate Modified Aptamer). SOMAmers are superior, high affinity protein binding reagents synthesized with chemically modified nucleotides. The SOMAscan assay currently measures 1129 distinct, native proteins in 65ul biological samples and is proving to be a breakthrough proteomic tool ideal for hypothesis-free biomarker discovery studies, identifying new drug target candidates, measuring therapeutic responses and pharmacodynamic markers, and myriad other applications.
In addition to describing the technology several examples will be given where the technology has been successfully applied.
